England Cricket Team Captain Annouced For Australia Series
Harry Brook to Lead England in ODI Series Against Australia, Replacing Injured Jos Buttler
Harry Brook will take on the role of captain for England’s five-match ODI series against Australia. This decision comes after Jos Buttler was ruled out for the remainder of the summer due to a calf injury he sustained back in July. With Buttler sidelined, Liam Livingstone has also been called back into the squad, having initially missed out on selection.
England cricket captains against Australia
Brook has long been considered a future captain for England, having led the Under-19 World Cup squad in 2018. He has gained leadership experience at various levels, including as Yorkshire’s temporary T20 Blast captain in 2022 and Northern Superchargers in the Hundred this year, where his team narrowly missed the knockout stages. Additionally, Brook served as Ollie Pope’s vice-captain in England’s recent Test series against Sri Lanka.
As Phil Salt currently captains England in their ongoing T20I series against Australia (tied at 1-1), Brook’s appointment signals the team’s intent to build long-term leadership options. The first ODI will take place at Trent Bridge this Thursday, with the series running until September 29.
Buttler’s prolonged absence is concerning given his history of calf injuries. He missed a major chunk of England’s Sri Lanka series in 2021 due to a similar issue and was later ruled out of the 2022 T20I series against Pakistan. His current recovery has been slower than anticipated, and he’s targeting a return for the Caribbean tour in November.
Liam Livingstone’s recall comes after his stellar T20I performances, where he hit an unbeaten 87 and took five wickets across two games. He expressed his surprise at not initially being named in the ODI squad, having delivered key performances in previous matches.
England’s ODI squad also sees the absence of Josh Hull due to a quad injury sustained during his Test debut. However, the team is optimistic that he’ll be fit in time for the Test tour of Pakistan in October.
