Northamptonshire gets the better of Leicestershire as Chahal delivers a masterpiece of five wickets
A day of dominance by spinners at Wantage Road saw Northamptonshire get the better of Derbyshire on another tense day with Indian leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal shining through. Derbyshire innings was brought down by Chahal’s astonishing feat of 5 for 45 in the last six wickets in which they bundle up for a mere 15 runs.
Chahal was playing in third first-class match and along with him, there was excellent spell by Rob Keogh, 3 for 65. Together they put in a spirited performance to frustrate Derbyshire and leave the latter at a mere 165 in their first innings and after that Northamptonshire had a lead of 54 runs. However, Harry Moore of Derbyshire has made early breakthrough of the day but, by the end of the day Northamptonshire established dominance with overall lead of 232.
Wayne Madsen scored 47 runs and Luis Reece restored the fight with 50 for Derbyshire but Chahal turned the side with a magnificent spell of 7-1-12-3 that included a double wicket maiden. On the other hand, Keogh and Gus Miller (42) ensured that Northamptonshire settled into the second innings after which this game put the team in a very commanding position.
Earlier, for Northamptonshire, Ben Sanderson got his team off to a good start with the early wickets but it was Chahal who grabbed the big wickets for his side. In response, Derbyshire’s spinners Alex Thomson and Jack Morley soaked Northamptonshire but could not make furthermost, for Keogh took his team to a good lead before rain ceased the play.
