IND vs SL cricket scene, Hardik Pandya, who previously served as the vice-captain during India’s successful T20 World Cup campaign, has been passed over for the captaincy. Instead, Suryakumar Yadav has been chosen to lead the team following Rohit Sharma’s retirement. Agarkar mentioned that Pandya’s fitness issues were a key factor in this decision.
“Naturally, we want a captain who can participate in all matches. We believe Suryakumar Yadav is a deserving candidate, and we will observe how he grows into the role over time,” Agarkar stated during a press conference on Monday (July 22).
“Hardik remains a crucial player for us. His unique skill set is hard to come by. However, his fitness has been a challenge in recent years, making it more difficult for coaches and selectors alike,” Agarkar explained.
“As we approach the next T20 World Cup, we have time to evaluate and make informed decisions without rushing. We want Hardik to perform well, and his fitness remains a significant consideration. Suryakumar’s qualities as a captain are promising, and we hope he thrives in this role,” he added.
Agarkar also clarified that the leadership change was carefully considered well before the World Cup.
“Selecting a captain involves thorough deliberation. It’s not a decision made overnight. We have had these discussions over the past few months leading up to the World Cup,” he said.
“Players must constantly prove their worth, and feedback from the team plays a significant role in such decisions. A captain’s frequent availability is crucial. We hope Suryakumar will meet these expectations,” Agarkar concluded.
Despite this significant change, Agarkar assured that Hardik Pandya has been kept informed about the decision. “We communicate with every player about role changes. Hardik remains part of the team and is kept in the loop,” he added.
Regarding Ravindra Jadeja’s exclusion from the ODI squad, Agarkar emphasized that it was due to workload management, not performance. “Jaddu has had an excellent World Cup, and his omission is not a sign of him being dropped. We need to manage players’ workloads with a big Test season ahead,” Agarkar explained.
The non-selection of players like Rinku Singh and Sanju Samson was described by Agarkar as “unfortunate” due to limited squad spots. “Choosing just 15 players is challenging, and despite strong performances from others, only the best balance can be achieved. Depth in the squad is essential, and players must stay ready for opportunities,” Agarkar noted.
Finally, with Rishabh Pant’s return to T20I cricket and potential inclusion in other formats, Agarkar stated that Suryakumar Yadav’s role will remain focused on T20s for now. “With key players like Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul back, Surya is currently only considered for T20s. Rishabh’s return is a step forward, and we aim to integrate him into the ODI format eventually,” Agarkar concluded.
