Morne Morkel Named New Bowling Coach for India Men’s Team

Morne Morkel former South Africa pacer has been named as the new fast-bowling coach of senior India men’s cricket team and he will begin his role from September 1. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah made this announcement.

Morne Morkel, for personal reasons was not able to be part of the training camp and also he missed recent Sri Lanka tour.Absence of someone like Sairaj Bahutule is understandable as it seems logical that a fielding coach will stay back with men’s team for six white-ball games. The 39-year-old links up with Gambhir — his current mentor at the Lucknow Super Giants in IPL and ex-IPL teammate- as a part of team India coaching staff. As per a report in Cricbuzz, it was Gambhir who suggested the name of Morkel to BCCI for this role.

Gambhir had in fact worked together with Morkel for 2 years as a coach at LSG where the two built up an extremely close relationship. Gambhir went to the Kolkata Knight Riders and head coach Andy Flower was transferred to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Morkel remained with LSG as he carried on in his role of bowling coach under Justin Langer.

He had also been the bowling coach with last year’s ODI World Cup in India, and ultimately resigned from his post a few months before that contract was due to finish having signed on with Pakistan afterwards.

Following are the rest of his support staff: Assistant Coaches : Abhishek Nayar & Ryan ten Doeschate Fielding coach T Dilip, who was with the previous team management headed by Rahul Dravid, and masseur Ashok Enoch have been retained in those roles.
